Make Euclid/2nd St Crosswalks Safer for All: Implementing HAWK Flashing Beacons

Make Euclid/2nd St Crosswalks Safer for All: Implementing HAWK Flashing Beacons
The Issue
The Euclid and 2nd St crosswalks are used daily by students, faculty, residents, and tourists, yet lack the infrastructure to keep them safe. Following the tragic event on October 30th, where three university students were involved in a hit-and-run, one being in critical condition and two lives taken away, the community is desperate for the city to take action.
HAWK (High-Intensity Activated Cross WalK) flashing beacons have been installed at over 130 locations throughout the city (ex. Euclid/5th St, Fremont/6th St, Cherry/Broadway). According to the Federal Highway Administration, “… pedestrian crashes dropped by three-fourths due to HAWKs”.
By signing this petition, you are helping to inform city officials about the community's need for safer crosswalks. The loss of our peers is UNACCEPTABLE AND PREVENTABLE. Show your concern and support for this change to the intersection by working together to honor the lives lost and ensuring better conditions for all.
UPDATE:
The names of the victims have been released: Sophia Troetel, Josiah Santos, and Katya Castillo-Mendoza. Out of respect for the family, I will not write about their personal lives. Each of them—Sophia, Josiah, and Katya—is a valued community member, and their lives have left lasting impacts on everyone who knows them.
