The Issue

Growing up, I've always found solace and inspiration in nature, whether hiking through national parks or simply enjoying the natural beauty around us. However, my love for the outdoors has been met with a growing concern. The environment, as we know it, is rapidly deteriorating, and the effects of climate change are becoming alarmingly evident in our community. This urgency has compelled me to advocate for a significant change: making Environmental Science a mandatory high school graduation requirement in the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD).

Our planet is facing unprecedented challenges. To highlight one staggering fact, we are currently consuming natural resources at a rate that is 50% higher than what our Earth can regenerate. This unsustainable trajectory not only threatens the delicate balance of ecosystems but endangers our future. Climate change is not just a distant threat; its impacts are felt at home. Heatwaves, wildfires, and poor air quality have all become more frequent, affecting everyone, especially our younger generation.

By integrating Environmental Science into the core curriculum of high schools within SCUSD, we are taking a bold step towards increasing climate literacy among our youth. With greater awareness and education, students can not only understand the severity of the crisis but also become equipped with the knowledge to advocate for and implement solutions. Young people hold the key to innovative solutions and their empowered voices can drive significant environmental action.

Moreover, this initiative will inspire students to pursue careers in environmental fields, fostering a generation of scientists, educators, and policy-makers dedicated to sustainable development. Making Environmental Science a required course will imbue them with an understanding of the intricate relationship between human actions and the environment.

We've witnessed the passion students have for social and environmental issues, yet without the foundational knowledge provided by such a course, they may lack the tools to make meaningful change. This proposed change isn't just about checking a box for graduation; it's about preparing informed citizens ready to tackle the environmental challenges of our time.

We must act swiftly and decisively to ensure the health of our planet and community. By signing this petition, you advocate for a proactive educational approach to develop an environmentally conscious generation. Let's instill climate literacy in our high school students for a brighter, more sustainable future. Please join me in urging SCUSD to include Environmental Science as a high school graduation requirement.
