Make Employers Responsible for the Safe Journey Home of Women Working After Midnight

Make Employers Responsible for the Safe Journey Home of Women Working After Midnight
The Issue
I am calling for urgent change to protect women who are required to work after midnight in London and across the UK.
Every night, thousands of women finish shifts in hospatility, healthcare, retail, cleaning, security, entertainment, and other industries and are left to travel home alone in the most dangerous hours. Many face harassment, intimidation, and fear simply for trying to get home after work. This is not acceptable in a society that claims to take Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) seriously.
I am a firm believer in the VAWG strategy and in the right of women to feel safe -- not just in their homes and workplaces, but on the journey between the two.
At present, many employers benefit from late night female labour while taking no responsibility for how their staff get home. Women are forced to walk alone, wait at empty bus stops, or spend money they cannot afford on taxis because there is no alternative. No woman should have to choose between her safety and her income.
This must change.
I am calling on the Government, the Mayor of London, and employers to introduce a legal requirement that companies employing women after midnight must:
- Provide safe transport home (such as a company-paid taxi or black cab) or
- Partner with licensed taxi or private hire services (e.g. Uber) to ensure safe travel, or
- Implement verified safe travel schemes for late-night staff.
This is a matter of duty of care. It is a workplace safety issue. And it is a VAWG issue.
Women should not be left vulnerable because of their shift patterns. Employers must share responsibility for the risks created by late-night working.
If we are serious about tackling Violence Against Women and Girls, then we must address the environments and situations that put women at risk -- and that includes the journey home from work.
What I want to change,
I want the law and workplace standards to change so that:
- Women are no longer left to travel alone after midnight because of their job.
- Employers are held accountable for the safety impact of late-night shifts.
- Safe travel home becomes standard practice, not a privilege.
This is not about luxury. It is about safety, dignity, and basic human rights.
