Make Emotional and Psychological Support available for Nurses Referred to the NMC
The Issue
And ensure the NMC do more timely investigations to aid a nurses mental health! To many nurses are dying due to the stress of referrals and wait times !
I am a nurse who was referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Prior to being cleared, I was treated as though I had done something wrong, released by my employer, and left in a state of constant worry for two uncomfortable years. Once the fog cleared, no emotional support was offered to me, even after I received a casual letter suggesting that nothing serious had happened, and my employer called me to resume work as if it were just another day. This situation echoes the experiences of many nurses across the United Kingdom.
In 2018, the NMC received 5,373 new concerns about nurses or midwives, almost all of whom faced a grueling waiting period before their cases were resolved. It becomes emotionally draining to continue working under such circumstances, impairing our capability to deliver effective patient care (NMC, 2018).
With rising mental health concerns among healthcare professionals, it's time we demand change. All nurses referred to the NMC should not only be treated with respect but should also receive have the opportunity to receive emotional and psychological support to maintain their dignity in such emotionally challenging situations. This support system should be in place from the moment of referral until the issue is completely resolved.
Regardless of the outcome of the NMC's hearing, nurses deserve emotional support to continue contributing their valuable services to the healthcare system. Sign this petition to end our silent suffering and bring about a much-needed change in the way we treat our nurses.
