The Issue

The USA doesn't have the best voter turnout in the world. The 2020 election the United States had its highest voter turnout at 66%. There are other countries with higher voter turnouts in their latest elections. Russia's election in 2018 had a voter turnout of 67.5%, France's 2022 election had a voter turnout of 74.9%, Germany's 2021 election had a voter turnout of 76.6%, South Korea's 2022 election had a voter turnout of 77.1%, Brazil's 2018 election had a voter turnout of 79.7%, Sweden's 2018 election had a voter turnout of 87.2%, and Belgium's 2019 election had a voter turnout of 88.4% (last updated 2022, https://www.statista.com/chart/15996/share-of-the-voting-age-population-that-voted-in-the-most-recent-national-election/ I find that a way to help improve voter turnout is making Election Day a federal holiday.

If Election Day was a Federal Holiday, it would free some time for people to vote as that means they would have the day off. If people have the day off work, they would have less of an excuse to not vote. 13.4% of the employed have government jobs, of which include Public School staff, firefighters, police officers, and U.S. postal workers. Having Election Day a federal holiday would give them the day off and would help get them to vote. It could even help encourage other people to vote as it is literally a holiday revolving around voting. With that, it would improve voter turnout and would make the United States seem more democratic.

That's mainly why I want to make Election Day a Federal Holiday is to get the voter turnout up. Probably another way is to allow criminals to vote but I feel like we might need to reform our incarceration system and debate on all the limitations we might have for them (like anything that proves they reformed before they should be able to vote) beforehand.  The president of the United States is a very influential role in the world as a whole and not just the country with the United States being a powerhouse and the president represents US citizens. The president would better represent us if more people were able to to vote. Same thing applies to Congress and State governments. If you agree we should make election day a federal holiday, sign and share with anyone you know.
