Make E-Scooters Legal in Australia
The issue
Let's stand up for our freedom and right to ride our privately owned e-scooters (maximum of 350w/25kmh) publicly in VIC, NSW and SA. We all should be aware that there MUST be set rules and regulations in place to ensure the safety of the public when riding e-scooters (age restrictions, safety equipment, road rules and speed restrictions on devices above 350w) and we must abide by such laws at all cost. But, as it currently stands police and state regulators in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia are prosecuting riders for "driving unregistered vehicles" and we want this law CHANGED. A statement from VicRoads advises that – “In addition, riding a high-powered (350w/25kmh, so high powered...) privately owned e-scooter on a public road or road related area can also attract an $909 fine for riding an unregistered vehicle”. E-scooters can’t be registered.
The government legally allow the public to purchase e-scooters services such as lime and neuron (with motors exceeding 200 watts) whilst on the other hand criminally charging individuals who choose to ride their own privately owned scooters on public roads.
Electric scooters are the way of the future and are here to stay! They not only reduce the cost of living for Australians but have incredible benefits to our environment. Let's stand together to show the specified state Governments that we have a right to ride without fear of being prosecuted. Take your stand today and SIGN!
