The Issue

On July 5th, 2025, my nephew's life was tragically cut short. As he was driving responsibly, a reckless driver attempted an illegal pass, swerving into his lane and crashing head-on into his car, resulting in a fatal collision. Disturbingly, this driver, not only lacked insurance but was also operating a vehicle with a license that had been revoked on June 11th, 2025, as per the records.

Stories like this are heart-wrenching and unfortunately, all too common in Wisconsin. Drivers like the one who took my nephew's life pose a deadly risk, and current laws are not deterrent enough. According to Wisconsin's Department of Transportation, there are thousands of incidents annually involving unlicensed drivers, and the situation has not improved significantly despite existing penalties.

By making it a felony for individuals to operate a vehicle without a valid license and cause a death, we send a clear message that such reckless behavior will not be tolerated. This legal measure can serve as a significant deterrent, potentially saving countless lives.

Revising the law to make driving with a revoked license, resulting in the death of another, a felony, will not only honor the memory of those already lost, but also protect future generations from unnecessary and preventable tragedies. There are actionable steps that Wisconsin's lawmakers can take to address this loophole in the legal system, providing stronger enforcement and stricter penalties for violation.

Please join me in urging Wisconsin's legislators to amend their laws to reflect the seriousness of this offense and hold accountable those who choose to endanger lives through negligent actions. Sign this petition, and together, we can make Wisconsin roads safer for everyone.
