We, the Campbell residents, treasure the joy of our beloved Sunday farmers market. It is during this time that the main street closes to road traffic, which instills in us a sense of community and togetherness. Restaurants and cafes in the area have seized this opportunity to add roadside patios, further enhancing the vibrant atmosphere that we all love. The ease and freedom to traverse downtown on foot is a feeling that we wish to secure permanently.

To retain this sense of community and support for local businesses, we propose to convert the main street in downtown Campbell into a permanent pedestrian zone. This is not an uncommon practice; cities across the world have transitioned to pedestrian-only zones with great benefits. In fact, according to the Project for Public Spaces, pedestrian plazas can greatly enhance local economies and inspire community engagement.

The benefits do not stop there; pedestrian streets also contribute to lowering carbon emissions, supporting the city’s sustainability goals. They afford safer spaces for children, senior citizens, and disabled individuals to navigate, thereby improving overall public health and safety.

Additionally, this conversion would not hinder traffic flow through downtown, as there are already parallel streets that allow cars to traverse downtown.
