The Issue

In early November, 47 dogs, many scarred, starving, and chained to filthy barrels, were rescued from alleged dogfighting rings in Chester and Lancaster counties. The scene was brutal. Nursing puppies were found in cages caked with feces. Some dogs were limping with fresh bite wounds. Equipment clearly used for training animals to fight was scattered across the properties. Guns and drugs were also found on site, revealing how closely dogfighting is linked to other violent crime.

Despite the horror, South Carolina law still treats dogfighting as a crime that is often met with probation or short jail time, even for repeat offenders. That is not justice. And it is not a deterrent.

Dogfighting is not a backwoods “game.” It is a violent and organized blood sport where animals are forced to maul each other for profit. It leaves dogs dead or permanently injured and fuels criminal networks that put entire communities at risk. But unless the punishment matches the cruelty, these abusers will keep operating in the shadows.

We are calling on the South Carolina Legislature to pass legislation that increases mandatory sentencing for dogfighting, strengthens penalties for those found with fighting equipment, and treats repeat offenses as felonies with real prison time, not slaps on the wrist.

In 2024, South Carolina took a big step by passing a new cost-of-care law, which helps agencies rescue abused animals more quickly. Now it is time to finish the job and make sure those responsible face real consequences.

These dogs cannot speak for themselves, but we can.

Sign now to demand tougher laws and real accountability. South Carolina’s animals and communities deserve protection.
