The Issue

As a parent of Indian origin raising my daughter here in Chesterfield County, this issue is deeply personal to me.

For our family, Diwali — the Festival of Lights — is one of the most meaningful times of the year. It’s when we gather as a family, light diyas, share sweets, and tell stories that remind us of the power of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and goodness over evil.

These traditions are how I help my daughter understand her roots and heritage — to see beauty in where she comes from and pride in who she is. But every year, when Diwali falls on a school day, she faces a painful choice: to miss school and risk falling behind, or to go to school and miss being part of something that connects her to generations of family, faith, and community.

No child should have to choose between honoring their culture and attending school.

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, there is a growing community of Indian and South Asian residents in Chesterfield County, contributing to the county’s vibrant cultural tapestry. We are educators, doctors, small business owners, engineers, parents, and students — proud to call Chesterfield home. By recognizing Diwali as a school holiday, Chesterfield County Public Schools would not only support this thriving community but also enrich the educational environment for all students, helping them gain a broader perspective of the world and a deeper appreciation for their classmates’ cultures.

Neighboring school districts like Henrico County and Richmond Public Schools have already taken this inclusive step by closing schools for Diwali. It’s time for Chesterfield to do the same — to show that we value and celebrate all the cultures that make our community stronger.

Recognizing Diwali is more than marking a date on the calendar — it’s about what we want our children to see reflected in their schools and their community: respect for every culture, pride in one’s heritage, and the belief that light will always lead the way.

Together, we make Chesterfield shine brighter.
