MAKE DIWALI A PUBLIC HOLIDAY IN SYDNEY/AU
The issue
MAKE DIWALI AN OFFICIAL PUBLIC HOLIDAY IN SYDNEY/AU
Diwali is an official holiday in Fiji, Guyana, India, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Suriname, and Trinidad & Tobago. Also it's been declared as public holiday in NewYork-USA from 2023.
Sydney has over 300k Hindus and in Australia over 700k - Hindus are largest growing community in Australia. Notably Hindus are one of the highest tax paying community and most peaceful & law abiding people. We as a community demand Diwali to be declared an official Public Holiday preferably in larger cities like, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, etc.
Let's demand it to have Diwali as Public Holiday in Sydney from 2023.
WHAT IS DIWALI?
The word Diwali (or Deepavali) means “row of lights” in an ancient language of India, called Sanskrit. During this festival, people decorate their homes with lights and lamps, called diyas.
It’s a celebration of good triumphing over evil. Diwali honors the Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. The lights and lamps are said to help Lakshmi find her way into peoples’ homes, bringing prosperity in the year to come!
