The Issue

I'm reaching out to shed light on an issue that's personal to me as a student in the class of 2026. In the first term of the same year, students did not have to sit for diploma exams, but we, in the second term, are expected to. This discrepancy is causing unnecessary stress and anxiety for many of us, including myself. I am not someone who excels in standardized tests, and being forced to take these exams could potentially lower my overall grade. This could negatively affect my graduation and future opportunities.

Diploma exams are known for their high stakes and pressure, which can impact students' performances in ways that don't truly reflect their abilities or hard work. According to recent studies, a significant portion of a student's understanding and mastery of a subject can be demonstrated through continuous assessment rather than a single set of exams. Furthermore, many educational systems worldwide are moving away from high-stakes testing to more holistic approaches.

It's crucial that the school board considers our concerns. Making diploma exams optional would alleviate undue stress and allow students like myself to graduate without compensation for the discrepancies between semester requirements. Moreover, this change could serve as a progressive step toward a more equitable and just education system that values diverse ways of learning and demonstrating knowledge.

We're calling on educators, officials, and fellow students to support this initiative. By making diploma exams optional for the class of 2026, we can ensure a fairer educational experience for all. A system that prioritizes students’ mental well-being and reflects the true academic potential of learners is essential.

Please join me in signing this petition to urge the education board to make diploma exams optional for the class of 2026, ensuring every student has an equitable opportunity to succeed. Together, we can make a difference.
