The issue

Fishing has always been a cherished activity for my dad and me. Ever since I was little, the thrill of casting a line and spending quality time on the boat with him has created memories that are deeply embedded in my heart. However, due to the recent ban on demersal fishing in Western Australia, this beloved tradition of ours has been put on hold.

Demersal fishing refers to fishing that targets fish living on or near the seabed. It's a major industry that supports thousands of jobs and sustains many local businesses in Western Australia, a region famed for its rich marine biodiversity and thriving fishing communities. The ban has not only affected personal stories like mine but has had severe economic repercussions.

Local businesses, including bait and tackle shops, boat hire companies, and local restaurants that rely on fresh local catch, are struggling to survive. The ban impacts jobs and livelihoods during an already challenging economic climate. Many familial and community bonds are nurtured through the tradition of fishing, yet these too hang in the balance.

There are sustainable ways to manage fish populations while allowing demersal fishing to continue. Implementing better fish stock assessments, seasonal restrictions, and more regulated catch limits are just a few ways we can protect marine life without outright prohibiting the practice. By working closely with maritime scientists and local fishing communities, we can create a plan that ensures the health of our oceans while sustaining the cultural and economic fabric of Western Australia.

Please join me in calling on the Western Australian government to reconsider the blanket ban on demersal fishing. Our goal is to find a balanced solution that allows people like my dad and me to enjoy this tradition while supporting local economies and safeguarding our marine ecosystems. By signing this petition, you're supporting a cause that celebrates our lifestyle, sustains our communities, and protects our oceans for generations to come. Please sign and share this petition to make a difference.
