The Issue

As a father, my children have activities right after school that end after dark. Additionally, each morning after DST ends, drivers face the task of driving into a rising sun, making it MORE dangerous than driving with headlights. This is an issue that people across political spectrums agree on, and yet Congress hasn’t been able to get it done.

Daylight Savings Time (DST) has been a part of American life for over a century. It was initially implemented to save energy during World War I and has since become an annual practice in most states. However, the current system of changing our clocks twice a year is outdated and causes unnecessary disruptions to our daily lives.

Here are some compelling reasons why we should make Daylight Savings Time permanent:

1. Safety: Studies have shown that there is an increase in traffic accidents and fatalities during the weeks following the end of DST when we "fall back." Driving into a rising sun can be blinding and significantly impairs visibility on the roads. By making DST permanent, we can reduce these risks and make our roads safer for everyone.

2. Health Benefits: The sudden shift in time disrupts our sleep patterns, leading to fatigue and increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, workplace accidents, and even mental health issues such as depression. By eliminating this biannual time change ritual, we can promote better sleep quality for individuals across the country.

3. Economic Advantages: Extending daylight hours in the evening benefits various industries such as retail businesses who experience increased sales due to extended shopping hours during summer evenings. Additionally, outdoor recreational activities like sports events or tourism thrive with longer daylight hours.

4. Energy Conservation: While there are debates about whether DST actually saves energy or not; studies suggest that by extending daylight hours in the evening when electricity demand is typically higher than early mornings when most people are still asleep, we can potentially reduce energy consumption.

5. Public Support: According to a recent poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, approximately 70% of Americans support making Daylight Savings Time permanent. This issue transcends political affiliations and unites people from all walks of life.

It is time for Congress to listen to the voices of the American people and take action on this matter. By making Daylight Savings Time permanent, we can improve safety on our roads, enhance public health, boost our economy, and align with the desires of the majority.
