My wife suffered a fractured cheekbone after being hit by an e-bike while crossing a street. This personal tragedy exposed us to a harsh reality - the current traffic laws scarcely hold cyclists and e-bike riders accountable for their transgressions. 

Many countries, including the United States and Canada, already have laws in place ensuring cyclists or e-bike riders are liable for accidents they cause (source: Insurance Information Institute, and Ministry of Transportation, Canada). However, in many other regions, such vital legislation is woefully inadequate or non-existent. This lack of accountability further intensifies road safety issues, especially for pedestrians.

Research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that there's been a significant increase in injuries caused by bicycles and e-bikes over the past decade; clear indication that this is an issue that cannot be overlooked. It is imperative that cyclists and e-bike users who violate traffic rules are made accountable for their actions. It's time to call for an essential change in the system.
