The Issue

Growing up in the bustling streets of our city, I have seen the air getting thicker and roads more congested. As a lover of cycling, I've experienced firsthand the joy of cruising through the neighborhood, feeling the wind on my face and the pulse of a cleaner, greener earth under my wheels.

Our cities are facing mounting challenges—rising pollution levels, burgeoning health issues, an increasing import bill for fossil fuels, and shrinking job opportunities. But there exists a simple, elegant solution: cycling, especially for short distances. I urge the authorities to make it mandatory for all persons below 55 years of age to use bicycles for transportation within a 5-kilometer radius, ensuring exceptions for the physically challenged.

Cycling is not just a mode of transport but a catalyst for change. It keeps us healthy, contributing to the prevention of lifestyle diseases. Moreover, transitioning from fuel-powered vehicles to bicycles will significantly reduce our dependance on imported petroleum products, thereby stabilizing our economy. The streets, often cluttered with honking cars and smoky exhausts, could transform into vibrant corridors of life and activity.

Furthermore, the implementation of this initiative could unlock a plethora of job opportunities within the cycling industry—from manufacturing and maintenance to cycling infrastructure development. I propose an incentive for those who ride tandem bicycles with physically challenged individuals. This not only fosters a spirit of inclusivity but also promotes a more connected community.

Evidence from multiple European countries, like the Netherlands, which has made cycling a core part of its transport policy, shows dramatic improvements in urban living standards. Clean, breathable air, quieter streets, and healthier populations are achievable goals.

Join me in urging our city leaders to embrace this change. Let us work collectively to make our community healthier, more vibrant, and environmentally sustainable. Sign this petition to start a cycling revolution, benefiting both us and future generations.
