The issue

Facing the heartbreaking reality of my daughter's struggles, I came to understand the far-reaching impact of voluntary counselling programs for teenagers in Australia. When a young person refuses to accept help, families find themselves helpless, witnessing their child spiral uncontrolled into drug use, crime, violent behaviours, and academic failures.

This is not just an isolated incident; it is a widespread crisis. Countless parents, carers, teachers, and community members share this distressing experience. Families are being torn apart at the seams, siblings are left in anguish, and our already stretched police force, schools, and child protection services are overwhelmed trying to manage an increasingly unmanageable situation.

Despite being recognized as a significant issue, current policies only offer counselling on a voluntary basis. However, this approach leaves a gaping hole, with many youth not reaching out or outright refusing help. Meanwhile, the family structure suffers immense stress, unable to intervene or redirect their child toward a healthier path in life.

We propose reforming the system to make counselling services for at-risk teenagers mandatory rather than optional. This proactive step could prevent a multitude of negative outcomes, offering a safety net for youth who might otherwise fall through the cracks. Evidence shows that early intervention can greatly reduce instances of criminal behaviour, substance abuse, and mental health issues, contributing to a more resilient and flourishing society.

By initiating mandatory counselling for at-risk teenagers, we aim to alleviate the burden on police and community services, allowing these entities to focus more effectively on enforcement and other critical tasks. Partnerships could be formed with schools and community centers to ensure accessibility and reduce stigmatization, creating a trusted space for teenagers to engage in constructive dialogue and receive necessary support.

Let us urge the Australian government, from local councils to the national level, to acknowledge this pressing need. With enough voices joining together, this petition can spark the necessary legislative change to mandate counselling services without waiting for crisis levels to escalate further.

Join me in fighting for a future where no family feels helpless and no teenager lacks the guidance needed to thrive. Sign this petition and demand that our government makes counselling for at-risk teenagers compulsory. Your signature could be the first step toward a transformative policy that not only protects our youth but also fortifies our community's strength and cohesion.
