The Issue

India is, once again, at a crossroads.

The recent brutal rape-murder case of a female Kolkata doctor is not just another statistic- it is a grim reminder of the realities of our country. It is a piercing alarm, which forces us to wake up.

It's not just about doctors or women. It's a clear sign of systemic failures that still affect our nation today.

It reflects our inability: to protect, respect and value the lives of our citizens.

Despite the outrage and promises after the Nirbhaya case, people continue to suffer.

Even our homes remain unsafe, and our hearts feel heavy knowing that this could happen again—to any of us. The question remains: when will we be safe? How many more incidents will we address the root of this violence?

Consent is inseparable from human rights. It is our birthright to exist without fear, with dignity.

The violence stems from a culture that has blatantly failed to instil the basic principles of respect and consent. It is not enough to react with shock and anger each time such a tragedy occurs. We must start at the very bottom, with the education of our youth. We need to lay the foundations for a society where consent is understood, valued, and upheld as a core principle of human interaction.

If laws alone could ensure safety, Nirbhaya would have been the last victim. Laws alone can't ensure safety if not accompanied by long-lasting measures. We need to address where it all begins: changing mindsets and harmful attitudes

Our Ask

We must start comprehensive consent education in schools across India to prevent incidents.

Research shows that education, plus open discussions, has a positive impact. It fosters progressive attitudes and reduces rape culture.

Consent Education in India must:

  • Be Age-Appropriate
to students' development, from early primary to higher secondary

  • Be Comprehensive and Ongoing
integrated into the curriculum from Class 1 through Class 12 for continuous, progressive education on consent and respectful relationships

  • Beyond Classrooms
and focus on real-world applications. This education should include the experiences of victims and perpetrators. It must also engage the whole ecosystem: parents, teachers, and law enforcement; learning about the roles of various stakeholders in preventing and addressing sexual violence

  • Promote Active Learning
by engaging students with interactive methods. Use role-playing, discussions, field visits, and scenarios. These will help them understand and apply consent in different contexts.

  • Include Emotional and Social Dimensions
to address the emotional impact of consent and the responsibilities of all parties and have a deep understanding of the consequences of non-consensual behaviour.

  • Make it local
for it to adapt to India's diverse cultures and languages, making consent education relevant, respectful, and local.

  • Include Support Resources
for students who need help. Education on consent must link to resources for victims of sexual and gender-based violence.

This is not a call for change. It is a call to action and a plea to protect the vulnerable and to honour everyone's dignity in India.

Each one of us makes society, so let's change it.
