Make companies legally obliged to state latex products are used in their production lines

The Issue

In the UK, food manufacturers are currently not legally required to declare the use of latex in their production lines, as latex is not included in the list of mandatory allergens that must be labelled under the Food Information for Consumers (FIC) Regulation. This list includes 14 common allergens, such as nuts, milk, and shellfish, but not latex, as it is a non-food allergen.

A sufferer of latex allergy will go into anaphylactic shock and therefore will need urgent medical treatment as soon as possible.

That is exactly what happened to myself on the 25th October 2024 after I consumed a microwavable product from a company that had no legal obligation to state that latex was used on the production line.

I knew the meal itself had no allergens in that would cause me to have anaphylactic reaction,  I automatically had to assume that there was latex gloves used in the production line after my reaction.

After I reached out to the company that I had consumed the product from just under four hours before the reaction, they have since admitted they did indeed use latex gloves to produce the food.

I literally could have died from this if I hadn't have got myself to the hospital in time, after having no idea of the use of the latex.

I now live in fear with everything I eat, fresh, frozen, microwavable any food could potentially cause me another anaphylactic shock and other people who are allergic to latex too.

As I had to have adrenaline pumped into my system in the hospital, my heart rate sped up to 140bpm, the stress on my body was more than just this, anaphylactic shock affects the whole body, what if I die while I'm in the hospital being treated? Never see my children again?

This should also count for take aways and restaurants.

Food products legally must state allergens and if something is suitable for vegetarians or vegans and ofc food allergy sufferers, but those who are threatened with death from anaphylaxis from latex are not protected.  This HAS to change!
