Make Clare’s Law offenders public knowledge
The Issue
I've been a victim of domestic violence not once, but twice, and the aftermath of my last relationship has been heartbreaking and terrifying. The violence went beyond just physical harm, leaving me with emotional scars that will probably never fade. Not long after I mustered the courage to leave, the police revealed to me that he was listed under Clare’s Law. The shock of learning about his past, and the danger I unknowingly put myself in, was overwhelming.
If Clare’s law was public knowledge any Man or Woman could easily find out who they are going to end up in a relationship with as unlike Clare’s law it would be instant knowledge not 4 weeks maybe more for the police to tell you once you’ve requested Clare’s law. Just think that we would not only be protecting ourselves but we would also be making a huge difference for our kids one day! We could stop our kids going through what we have! Just imagine how low the rate of Domestic violence would be as we wouldn’t even enter a relationship knowing they were violent individuals.. there would be a lot less deaths due to Domestic violence.
What makes the whole thing worse with Clare’s law is once your told about a partner/ex being on Clare’s law you are not aloud to tell anyone!! Now that I don’t see as right so you are not aloud to tell someone they are potentially in danger of their new partner.. who does that say that the police are protecting the victim? Or the perpetrator?
Help me to try & stop so much violence & deaths due to knowing what we would be walking into! How many of your daughters.. sons.. granddaughters or grandsons have been through this? How much more are we going to take! Help me make this information public knowledge to help the next generation.. our daughters.. our sons & one day our grandchildren. This can’t keep going on. These violent individuals need to be put out there for public knowledge!
Clare’s Law, officially known as the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, allows the police to disclose information about a partner's past history of violence or abuse to protect those at risk. While this scheme is a crucial step in the right direction, the process requires individuals to proactively request this information. But what if we could do more to protect potential victims? What if the information was made publicly accessible, warning individuals before they even step into a potentially dangerous relationship?
According to the Office for National Statistics, nearly two million people in the UK aged 16 to 59 were victims of domestic abuse in the past year alone. Imagine how many could have avoided suffering if they had access to histories of violence through public knowledge of Clare’s Law disclosures. The current system leaves many in the dark. A public database, responsibly managed to protect privacy, could be a powerful deterrent against domestic violence and save countless lives.
I urge the Home Office to consider revising Clare’s Law to allow public access to these records, ensuring transparency and protection for all. By taking this pivotal step, we can work toward a future where fewer people suffer in silence, and violent abusers are held accountable upfront.
Please, join me in signing this petition to call for transparency and protection through accessible information on Clare’s Law offenders. Together, we can help create a safer society, prevent domestic violence, and hopefully save lives.
