Make Change to Theodore Roosevelt Campus Security — for the students!
The Issue
“They’re worst than TSA. They shout, yell, snap their fingers at you, and come at you for the smallest of things. I don’t understand why they’re so mean!”
Theodore Roosevelt not only hosts 5 schools, but they are also home to a middle school on the lobby floor. Located on Fordham Road, the busy streets and loud honks of cars are home to the education of many New York students. These scholars go through scanning each time they enter the building; and each time, they have a horror story.
One student says: “Security shook my bag around to try and find something, took my out headphones, Pringles chips, and 2 minutes later after i already left the scanners, observed my bag through the TV screen and asked if I had a tweezer.” A next student came with her cousin she recalls: “Security yelled at my cousin, telling her she couldn’t sit on the many benches in the lobby”
These are not the only accounts. People understand that this is a public school building in the heart of the bronx. However, both students and their parents have issues with how Security handles themself. They have a attitude problem it seems. “Security at the lobby not only dismisses students, but they have a stern tone with them.”
How much longer until students decided to fight back and be seen as “disrespectful” when all they want is to stop being profiled, yelled at, and disregarded each and every time they come to school before class starts? With the updated phone policy, they have found a new common trait: Digging in children’s personal bags to find a phone, or take out an item since they cant seem to read the scanner tv right. “Security dug in my friend’s bag to question, confiscate, and then yell at her about her two phones.” A student recalls.
Please sign this petition and help advocate for students rights! Its never too late to care for the youth and their mental state when coming to school.
