The Issue

In the quiet city of Carmi, Illinois, there has been a growing concern among residents about the increased surveillance implemented by our local police department. What started as a promise to enhance community safety has unfortunately turned into a breach of our fundamental rights. The installation of Flock cameras, without proper regulations or public consensus, raises alarming questions about privacy and governmental overreach.

These Flock cameras, used by the Carmi Police Department, capture and store license plate information and vehicle details. Such surveillance capabilities are invasive, capturing data from unsuspecting citizens of Carmi without their explicit consent. Many residents feel an unsettling sense of being watched, and it doesn’t seem that there is a clear strategy or transparency on how this data is used, stored, or who has access to it.

What’s even more concerning is the misuse of these cameras by the police officers. Without stringent guidelines and accountability measures in place, the risk of these devices being used unlawfully or biased targeting rises significantly. Reports from within the community suggest that these cameras have been used not just for crime prevention, but also to monitor individuals unnecessarily, crossing the line into excessive surveillance and privacy invasion.

Freedom and privacy are at the core of our rights as American citizens. The manner in which these cameras are deployed is reminiscent of a ‘Big Brother’ state, where residents unknowingly surrender their right to privacy.

We need the Carmi Police Department to remove these Flock cameras immediately, and for the city administration to engage in open discussions with the community on alternative, non-invasive measures that assure both safety and privacy. Let's work towards solutions that respect our rights while ensuring our city remains secure for everyone.
