Issue:

DON’T YOU THINK ELECTION DAY SHOULD BE A NATIONAL HOLIDAY IN CANADA?! Election day is supposed to be held on a Monday, so wouldn’t it just be easier for everyone to vote if they had the day off? It’s not like making election day a holiday is a new idea, either. Canadian allies such as Australia have already established their election day as a national holiday long ago. So why shouldn’t we take this step as well?

Benefits:

Voter turnout: If election day were a national holiday, more Canadians would find the time to go out and vote, creating a greater voter turnout.

Unity: Election day should be treated as a celebration of democracy. If it were a national holiday, Canadians would be able to unify, and celebrate the rights and freedoms that those before them fought for.

Accessibility: Making election day a national holiday would make voting more accessible to everyone, but especially to shift workers, low income families who work longer shifts, and single parents. Everyone’s voice deserves to be heard, not just those privileged enough to do so in our current system.

Accurate Election Results: When less people are capable of voting, obviously less people vote. This could affect election results, this could affect who is sitting in those parliamentary seats, this does affect who is making decisions for our country. Every. Vote. Matters. And every single one must be heard.

Action:

We call upon the house of commons to consider making election day a national holiday. Not only would voting be more accessible, but there would be a greater voter turnout, more accurate election results, and Canadians could get together and celebrate their democracy, creating more national unity.
