The issue

Right now in Australia a government can win on a clear promise, then pass a big change that reverses it, and all it needs is a simple majority. The same majority it already walked in with. No extra check, no need to convince anyone outside its own party.

I get that governments need room to move. The economy shifts, things go wrong, plans have to change. Fine. I'm not asking to lock anyone in forever. But breaking a clear, specific promise on something major is not the same as adjusting to a crisis, and it shouldn't be as easy as a normal party vote.

Here's what I want. If a law would clearly break a major election promise, it should only pass if it gets one of these:

• backing from MPs outside the governing party equal to at least 10% of the House, or
• real support from outside the governing party, not just its own MPs.
That's the whole idea. Not to stop governments changing their minds. Just to make sure a big backflip on what they promised can't be rammed through on their own numbers alone.

To me this is simple. Make it harder to walk away from a clear promise. Make them earn broader support first. And let the vote you cast actually mean something for the years after election day, not just on the day itself.

If you feel the same, sign it. You're backing stronger protection around the promises that win elections, and saying the big reversals should need broader agreement before they become law.
