Make British Summer Time (BST) Permanent - Scrap the 'Fall Back'

Make British Summer Time (BST) Permanent - Scrap the 'Fall Back'
The Issue
To: The Prime Minister and Members of the UK Parliament
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of the United Kingdom, call upon His Majesty's Government to abolish the practice of switching between British Summer Time (BST - UTC+1) and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT - UTC+0) and to adopt British Summer Time (BST) as the permanent, year-round standard time for the United Kingdom.
Reasons for Change:
The annual change to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in the autumn results in significantly darker evenings, which we believe negatively impacts public health, safety, and the economy. Making British Summer Time (BST) permanent would:
- Improve Public Health and Well-being:
• Darker evenings are linked to an increase in Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and general reduced mood. Permanently lighter evenings would allow more time for post-work outdoor activities, exercise, and social interaction, promoting physical and mental well-being.
• Maximising evening daylight could lead to greater energy expenditure and reduced sedentary behaviour across the population.
2. Enhance Road Safety:
• Numerous studies suggest that the lighter evenings of BST are associated with fewer road accidents, particularly involving pedestrians and cyclists, during peak commuting hours (the late afternoon/early evening). Retaining BST would save lives and reduce serious injuries.
3. Boost the Economy and Tourism:
• Lighter evenings encourage people to leave the house, shop, dine out, and participate in leisure and tourist activities after work, providing a stimulus to the retail, hospitality, and entertainment sectors.
4. Promote Energy Efficiency:
• While some argue for energy savings from an earlier sunrise, retaining evening daylight could reduce the demand for domestic and commercial lighting in the evening, when energy demand is typically at its highest.
The current twice-yearly time change is an anachronism that no longer serves the best interests of the modern UK. We urge the government to align the UK with current scientific evidence and public desire by adopting a permanent British Summer Time (UTC+1) clock setting.
We respectfully urge the UK Government to legislate for the immediate and permanent adoption of British Summer Time (BST - UTC+1) throughout the year.
