The Issue

As one of the Head Students at Breckland School in Brandon, it is my duty to advocate for the safety and well-being of all students. Unfortunately, the current 30mph speed limit and lack of clear signage, pose risks to those of everyone travelling through our school zone.

The establishment of a 20mph School Safety Zone, accompanied by clear and visible signage, is crucial for the protection of our students and the greater community.

Research conducted by reputable organizations like the UK's Department for Transport highlights the massive safety improvements with reduced speed limits. For example, the probability of a pedestrian being fatally injured drops significantly when vehicle speeds are reduced to 20mph. This statistic, alongside numerous studies, underscores the pressing need for revising our immediate school's speed regulations. Many schools across the country already have lower speed restrictions.

Therefore, I urge the Breckland Council and local authorities to take action by implementing a 20mph zone around our school together with proper, easily recognizable signage. Such measures will significantly mitigate accidents, enhance pedestrian safety, and foster an environment where education is prioritized without the overshadowing concern for physical safety.

Sign this petition to ensure the safety and security of all those who are part of the Breckland School community. Together, we can make a meaningful change for our school today and in the future.
