Make Boston Public School lunches healthier and more enjoyable for students
The Issue
As I walk into the Boston Latin School cafeteria, I make a beeline for where the food is being served, exhausted from an already tiring day. I take a good look at what is being served, and immediately walk away. It's a Friday, and they are serving pizza today. Or whatever they call that. It's supposed to be pizza, I guess, but it's not appetizing in the slightest. The crust is dry, and the "cheese" falls off in one piece after I take a bite. It's more like a piece of stale bread than pizza.
The nutritional quality of the foods at some schools in the BPS district is less than optimal. Multiple students voice complaints about the school lunches. Emilee Truong, an 8th grader at Boston Latin School, when asked about what she would change about the school lunches, said, "I would change the freshness of the food because sometimes the meat is raw and the veggies/fruits are rotting." Another student at BLS, Ade Osho, said, "I would change it so it could be more fresh and enjoyable for many students." It's time for a change. This petition is a call to action for all Boston Public Schools students to push for fresher and healthier lunches.
One problem is that the lunches aren't fresh enough. This could be helped by using fresh foods from local markets, or installing school gardens. Another issue is that the students don't like all the meals served. A way around this could be sending out surveys to the students asking what they want, and then they could vote on a couple of foods they want. Some of the meals are more popular with students, and so cafeterias could serve these more. A third pressing issue is the nutritional value of the meals. In one example week in May, the average calorie count for the entrees was 324 calories. Teenagers need 700-800 calories for lunch to stay healthy. 324 calories is not healthy enough, seeing as a lot of students don't eat much but the entrees. A solution to this could be increasing the portions, so the students get more calories.
In conclusion, I have presented problems, and clear solutions. If you are reading this petition, I urge you to sign so we can have healthier students across over 100 schools in the city.
