Make Baltimore’s Waterfront Safe: Prevent Needless Deaths in the Inner Harbor.

Make Baltimore’s Waterfront Safe: Prevent Needless Deaths in the Inner Harbor.
The Issue
As someone who works in Fells Point, I have seen the headline “Body recovered from the Inner Harbor” far too many times and you have too. These are not isolated incidents—they are part of a pattern that has gone unaddressed for years. Baltimore’s waterfront is one of the most heavily trafficked nightlife areas in the city. Every weekend, thousands of people gather near open water with little to no protective barriers, limited lighting in some areas, and minimal emergency safety equipment. This is not just unfortunate—it is preventable. Dozens of people have been pulled from the harbor over the past decade. Recent tragedies, including a young man who went missing after a night out and a woman who accidentally drove into the harbor, highlight the urgent need for action. No one should be able to accidentally walk, fall, or drive into the water in a major U.S. city. We are calling on Baltimore City officials to take immediate action to improve waterfront safety by implementing: •Protective railings or barriers in high-risk areas •Increased lighting along all waterfront walkways •Clearly marked and accessible emergency ladders and life rings •Vehicle barriers in areas where cars can access the water •Visible warning signage in nightlife-heavy zones Baltimore’s waterfront should be a place to gather—not a place where preventable tragedies continue to occur. It’s time to prioritize public safety.
