After the horrific antisemitic attacks here in the UK, in Manchester, and in Bondi, it is clearer than ever before that Britain needs education about antisemitism to be made mandatory in schools.

I made this petition over 3 years ago due to my own experiences of antisemitism in school. Since then, we have made progress, and the Government has committed to funding Holocaust education in schools, but we demand more action.

Making education about antisemitism mandatory would teach the younger generation how contemporary antisemitism affects British Jews today, and provide them with a wider perspective than what is currently taught.

Please share the petition to show the government that there is support for this initiative, and please email your MP hereThere is a template letter below if you would like to use it.

Dear (insert MP’s name),

I am writing to you because I believe that education about antisemitism should be made mandatory in schools.

A 16-year-old Jewish student, Jonathan, has started a petition in support of this cause, which has over 5900 signatures. You can see the petition here: https://chng.it/DCLzkHZLkH

Jonathan states “At the synagogue I go to, the Rabbi asked the youth group how many of us had experienced antisemitism. Every single person put their hand up. Every single one of us has been discriminated against purely because we are Jewish.”

Thousands of Jewish students across the country have had the same experiences, of being discriminated against because of their religion and background, and it is time for the government to act. The recent attacks in Manchester, and in Australia, show the worrying tide of antisemitism spreading globally, and the UK government should take a lead in combatting anti-Jewish discrimination through education.

Jewish people make up 0.5% of the population, but are 500% more likely to be a victim of a hate crime than any other faith group per capita. By implementing compulsory education about antisemitism in schools, it would teach a generation of students about anti-Jewish discrimination, and it would ensure that it is rooted out of our country.

Whilst it is important to recognise that Holocaust education is mandatory, this does not go far enough. If this was enough, why would antisemitic hate crimes be up in London by 1,350%? If this was enough, why have there antisemitic attacks in our country? The reality is that it is clear that the current education is not tackling antisemitism, and the Government must take new measures to tackle it.

As my local representative in parliament, you have the power to call for change, and give light to this campaign in parliament. Please use your voice to call for mandatory education about antisemitism, so that Jewish people can feel safe in our country.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,
