The Issue

I am only 12 years old, and it breaks my heart to even have to write this, but the necessity for safe and accessible restrooms for transgender individuals in schools and public places cannot be ignored. For many of my closest friends, who bravely defy gender norms and expectations , using a restroom or a changing space should not be a source of anxiety or fear. It is truly devastating to see them unable to feel represented in what is a basic amenity, intended to be welcoming to everyone of all identities.

The reality is, in many places around the world, including my own community, transgender individuals face discrimination and fear simply for using public toilets. This is more than an issue of infrastructure; it is a reflection of society's total failure to be compassionate and understanding. Transgender and non-binary people are often subject to derogatory remarks or worse (like death threats, or in some cases physical assault,) when they attempt to use restroom that align with their gender identity. This kind of treatment is inexcusable, cruel and stems from underlying prejudices that should’ve been buried in the past long long ago. Studies continue to show that providing amenities that are accessible for all sexes and genders significantly reduces these negative experiences, thereby improving the lives of transgender and LGBTQ+ people.

Politicians have put the burden on us—the younger generation—to demand change. We have been thrust into politics, worrying more about our basic human rights being violated than our personal growth and health. Why should this be our reality? Why has it gotten so bad that we must demand for change?

The solution is stupidly straightforward. Schools and public buildings must implement policies and provide facilities that are inclusive to individuals of all gender identities. This includes creating gender-neutral or all-gender restrooms, which studies show significantly decrease harassment and assault rates. Additionally, educational institutions should incorporate gender inclusivity training for all students and staff to create safe environments. We must understand that even if not all people understand or find our identities reasonable, we as citizens of Britain must show the values of tolerance towards each and everyone of different beliefs and identities.

This is a call to our education boards and government officials: Take immediate action to ensure all public restrooms are safe and accessible to transgender individuals. It’s not just a simple adjustment, it’s a matter of human dignity.

Please sign this petition, and let's demonstrate to those in power that we demand a world where everyone, regardless of gender identity, can access public spaces without fear or discrimination. Thankyou all! ❤️-Olivia round, to all my dearest friends and family.
