Make all period products free of cost in Australia
The issue
I started this petition because I personally know how expensive period products can be, especially when they're a necessity that must be purchased every month. No one should have to worry about affording such a basic necessity or feel stressed due to the cost of something as essential as managing their period.
In Australia, the cost of period products continues to be a significant burden on women and menstruating individuals. While there have been efforts to reduce the cost by removing the GST, the financial strain remains for many. According to a survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the average monthly expenditure on basic sanitary products ranges from $10 to $20. For many, especially those in lower-income households, this amount is challenging to allocate each month.
The consequences of not affording these essential products can be severe. Studies indicate that nearly 1 in 5 Australian women have at times gone without sanitary products due to financial constraints. This situation is not only unfair but also detracting from their dignity and ability to participate fully in daily life, whether it be work, education or social activities.
To address this issue, I propose that we take action by urging the Australian government to make period products free of cost in public schools, workplaces, and community centers. Providing access to free period products in these places would ensure that everyone has the ability to manage their menstruation with dignity, regardless of their economic status. Scotland became the first country to make period products free for all, setting a remarkable precedent that Australia should follow.
By implementing such measures, Australia can take a significant step forward in reducing period poverty and promoting gender equality, ensuring that no one has to make a choice between buying food and purchasing sanitary products again.
