Hi Super Supporters!
I am SO excited to tell you the fantastic news that Aldi has made the decision to stop the production of their own-brand plastic tampon applicators! The move will stop unnecessary plastic at source and will save 14 tonnes of plastic annually!
The supermarket is removing their own-brand range of ‘compact’ plastic tampon applicators from stores, with all products off the shelves by the end of January 2020!
A quote from Fritz Walleczek, Managing Director of Corporate Responsibility at Aldi UK and Ireland: “We’re constantly reviewing our product range to remove and replace unnecessary, single-use plastic and applicators are an example of exactly this. Ella’s work to drive awareness of the use of plastic in sanitary products is really commendable. As a business, cutting waste is what we do, and it’s great to be able to support her efforts.”
Although the campaign is calling for the removal of all plastic from period products, stopping the production of plastic applicators is the first step manufacturers can take towards going plastic-free.
They are the second decision maker on the campaign, following Sainsbury’s in August 2019 to take this important step and I hope to see more positive changes like this being made in the period industry soon.
Changes like this being made by decision makers because of the campaign shows the impact you are all having, people power works! THANK YOU for your constant support and for getting involved with actions on the campaign.
