Happy New Year Super Supporters!

Last year we had a direct influence on two supermarkets deciding to stock alternatives, it’s now 2019 and with a New Year comes new targets, so let’s take action and make this the year of change the Year of the Plastic-Free Period!

Over the past few months I have seen countless photographs on social media of plastic tampon applicators in the sea and on beaches and many supporters have also highlighted this issue, finding them regularly on their local beaches too.

Every year in the UK 1.3 billion plastic tampon applicators go into landfill and 1.5-2 billion period products are incorrectly flushed down toilets, which can then enter waterways and the ocean. They pollute and negatively impact the environment and contribute to ocean plastic which kills around 1 million sea birds, 100,000 sea mammals, marine turtles and countless fish each year. Overtime their plastic content will break down into smaller pieces known as micro-plastics and fibres which are then a further threat to marine-life and wider ecosystems.

Applicators are used for a matter of seconds and should never be made from a material so durable that it takes centuries to break down. There really is no excuse for this excessive use of plastic.

Let’s take action and tweet lil-lets to take responsibility for the unnecessary plastic content in their period products and to stop producing plastic applicators, which are having an avoidable impact on the natural world and wildlife!
