The Issue

Previous public voting has been disregarded. Community members invested their time and effort into voicing their opinions and participating in public consultations, only to see their voices go unheard. This disregard for public input not only undermines the democratic process but also discourages citizen engagement.

Public consultations are meant to be a cornerstone of democracy, facilitating meaningful dialogue between citizens and their elected representatives. They exist to ensure that the community's opinions are genuinely considered in decision-making processes. However, when these consultations are not binding, decisions are often made without regard to the collective will of the people.

In numerous instances, decisions made by the council have not reflected the results of public consultations, leading to frustration and mistrust among residents. For example, in a recent case concerning the development of local green spaces, an overwhelming majority voted to preserve these areas, yet the council pushed forward with plans that ignored this public outcry.

To restore faith in the democratic process, we propose that all council public consultations be made binding. This change would ensure that the outcomes of consultations are respected and implemented, thereby honoring the time and effort citizens invest in these processes.

By making council consultations binding, we are not only reinforcing the value of public opinion but also fostering a culture of transparency and accountability. It's a step towards ensuring that the decisions reflect the real needs and desires of the community.
