The Issue
I recently found myself in a situation that countless other students in Alberta could relate to. Despite my hard work and dedication, I was waitlisted for two university programs I had applied for. I was devastated, especially upon learning that the programs were filled by students whose high averages were largely due to the cancellation of diplomas in the previous semester.
The unfairness of this situation struck me deeply. Why should students in the second semester be disadvantaged just because they still have to take the diploma exams? It seems morally right to extend the same opportunities to them by making the diplomas optional.
Alberta's diploma exams currently play a significant role in determining a student's final grades. This added pressure not only affects students' mental health but also their future academic opportunities. Students have already experienced the positive impact of diploma cancellations, with increased admissions in various university programs.
Based on this experience, making diplomas optional gives a fairer playing ground for all students. Eliminating or reducing the weight of these exams on final grades could foster equality and provide students a stress-reduced environment to exhibit their true capabilities.
According to recent studies, stress is a leading cause of performance decline among students. By lowering the weight or canceling diplomas, we could potentially lessen anxiety and enhance student performance, allowing them to demonstrate their true potential without the fear and stress of a single exam affecting their entire future.
Our education system should adapt this approach to help students excel not only in academic pursuits but also in overall mental well-being. Other educational jurisdictions have made similar changes with beneficial results, showcasing improved mental health and academic outcomes.
Join me in urging the Alberta Ministry of Education to make April/June 2026 diploma exams optional and remove their weight on final grades. This change is not only about fairness; it's about allowing all students the opportunity to thrive without the added stress of high-stakes testing.
Please support this cause to help shape a better, more equitable educational environment for all students in Alberta. Sign the petition today and help create change for the future of education in our province.
