The Issue

In today's digital age, technological advancements have brought both incredible benefits and alarming threats to privacy. One such threat is the creation and spread of AI-generated deepfakes, particularly those of a sexual nature. Recently, a distressing incident involving the prominent Twitch streamer "Pokimane" highlighted the pervasive issue of AI deepfake misuse. Pokimane, whose real name is Imane Anys, found herself at the center of controversy when fellow streamer Atroic was discovered purchasing and possessing non-consensual AI-generated sexual deepfakes featuring her likeness. Disturbingly, despite the moral outrage, Atroic faced no legal repercussions due to loopholes in existing laws regarding AI deepfakes in the U.S.

Currently, U.S. legislation criminalizes the creation and distribution of AI-generated sexual deepfakes, yet astonishingly, the knowing possession and purchasing of such content by adults remain legal. This oversight directly contributes to a market that profits from the unsanctioned and non-consensual use of individuals' likenesses, violating their privacy and bodily autonomy. In light of the Pokimane drama, it is clearer than ever that legal reform is needed to close these gaps.

Deepfakes can cause irreparable harm to individuals, impacting their mental health, reputations, and professional lives. Victims often face severe emotional distress, cyberbullying, and harassment. Allowing the possession and purchase of this content without consequence emboldens its spread and further exploits the vulnerable.

We are calling for decisive action to amend existing laws, making the knowing possession and purchasing of non-consensual AI-generated deepfakes of identifiable adults legally punishable in the United States. This legislative change would deter potential buyers, decrease demand, and ultimately reduce the creation of such harmful content.

Support this petition to urge legislators to protect individuals from digital exploitation and help foster a safer online environment. By signing, you stand against the violation of privacy and bodily autonomy, and support creating a legal framework that respects every individual's rights in our digital world.
