Why this petition matters

Started by Laura Outhart

Conditions on Acomb Road (B1224) are currently extremely dangerous for children and other vulnerable road users.

It is the main access route for hundreds of children travelling to Acomb Primary School, local pre-schools and secondaries.  It is also used out of school hours by many kids going to the park and visiting friends.

Traffic on the road often moves extremely fast, visibility can be very poor - particularly around junctions - and there are no pedestrian crossings near the school.  It is also a major bus route and is used frequently by heavy vehicles.

Every day, 6 children are killed or seriously injured on Britain's roads. There have already been serious accidents in close proximity to the school, and many more near misses.  The Council's failure to provide safer conditions on Acomb Road is putting our children's lives at risk and is a major safeguarding issue.  Parents have been promised action for a very long time, but nothing has happened.

The Council must now take urgent action to improve the safety of Acomb Road to prevent further serious incidents occurring.

As a minimum, we demand that the Council takes immediate action to

  • Install a pedestrian crossing close to the school on Acomb Road - if necessary, starting with a temporary crossing until a permanent crossing can be in place
  • Reduce the speed limit on Acomb Road around the school & key junctions, bringing provision in line with other schools in the city

Longer term, we ask that the Council develops permanent improvements to Acomb Road (B1224) that provide much safer walking and cycling conditions.  The Council MUST NOT, however, use this long-term aspiration as an excuse to continue to delay taking action to improve safety on this critical route.

To note - we know CYC has tried to recruit a replacement Crossing Patrol Officer.  Although this would be welcomed, due to the limited hours & days of operation this alone would not fully address these concerns and would need to be provided in addition to the other measures listed above.
