Make a Safe Greenway! (Monkstown-Greenisland)-Northern Ireland

The Issue

I am one of the many who cycle and walk between Greenisland and Monkstown. The journey, however, is far from pleasant or safe. The current link on Old Carrick Road is muddy, filled with potholes, unlit at night and dangerous due to no pedestrian crossings alongside a high-speed road. It's not just physically challenging - it's mentally exhausting too.

A viable solution exists in the form of an old abandoned railway line that could be transformed into a greenway link between these two towns. This 2.5km route would provide a safer route for cyclists like myself and pedestrians alike. Moreover, the railway could potentially be reinstated alongside this greenway cycle and pedestrian route.

The benefits are clear - it would enhance safety for thousands of people who make this journey regularly while promoting healthier modes of transport such as cycling or walking. The greenway would also preserve the local culture/history of the railway and highlight its importance in transport throughout its history. It also aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions by encouraging more sustainable commuting options. Furthermore, it also aligns with the NI Climate Change Act 2022 which aims to reduce CO2 emissions, and it aligns with the dept infra’s supposed 10% budget on active travel (which they are currently misusing to build roads).

We urge local authorities to consider this proposal seriously – for our safety, our health, our environment. Please sign this petition to support the establishment of a safe greenway link between Monkstown and Greenisland in Northern Ireland!
