The Issue

As a current harpist in the Frisco Independent School District (FISD), I have first-hand experience of the incredible joy and satisfaction the harp program brings. As a community of staff and students, we strongly oppose the future plans to discontinue the harp program in Frisco Independent School District. For years, this program has been a platform for students like myself to engage with music, learning a unique instrument and developing various skills that go beyond academics. I, therefore, see no justification for this program to cease its privileges to incoming 6th graders.

Our harp program is a unique opportunity for students to explore these benefits, and it would be detrimental to deny our future students this opportunity. Frisco ISD has canceled this program due to raising money on a $27 million deficit. They have scrapped our efforts and hard work toward becoming a better musician. This decision decreases our efforts to mere financial choices, overlooking the passion and adventure that comes with harp. Even though this action does not worry present harpists, the future generation will be affected. Those that want to play harp will no longer be able to and the pleasure in triumphant improvement and joy in playing the harp will be extinguished.

This is not just about preserving the harp program; it's about continuing a legacy that allows new 6th graders to engage in an amazing musical adventure. We will stand and let the Frisco Independent School District notice our defiance and our resilience to continue the harp program; urging them to reconsider any decisions that would lead to its downfall. Together, let’s rally to save our harp program!
