Maintain staffing levels of librarians at Mornington Peninsula libraries
The issue
For over a decade, I have witnessed firsthand the invaluable impact that qualified librarians have on the community here on the Mornington Peninsula. I fondly remember my first visit to the community library as a teenager. It was a transformative experience, guided by a knowledgeable librarian who introduced me to the world of literature. Those memories have fueled my passion and dedication to ensuring that our libraries remain well-staffed and equipped.
Recently, the Library Services Review, conducted by Roger Henshaw Consultancy Services, along with proposals presented by the Mornington Peninsula Shire, have raised serious concerns regarding potential cuts to librarian staffing levels and removal of the mandatory tertiary qualifications for Senior Library Officers. These proposals threaten the integrity and quality of library services we have come to cherish and rely on.
Currently, our libraries serve as critical community hubs, offering not only access to books and digital resources but also essential support in information literacy, technology, and varied cultural programming. The presence of skilled librarians is crucial in maintaining the inclusive and educational environment that our community requires.
According to data from the State Library of Victoria, in 2019 alone, over 1.5 million Victorians visited a library at least once, with a significant portion depending on the expertise of librarians to guide their learning and development. Furthermore, statistics indicate that libraries are more than mere repositories of books— they are gateways to opportunity, especially for underserved and marginalized groups.
Counting on the dedication of librarians who possess the expertise to foster learning and community engagement is imperative. Any reduction in staffing will undoubtedly impair these essential services, diminishing access to vital resources for students, job seekers, and families.
It's crucial that we act now to preserve the staffing levels that ensure our libraries continue to flourish as centers of knowledge and community empowerment. I urge the Mornington Peninsula Shire to reconsider any plans to reduce librarian positions and instead invest in and prioritize the health of our library system. Please join me in this effort to protect our beloved institutions and sign the petition today.
