The Issue

The impact of after-school programs within the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) system extends far beyond mere academic considerations. As someone who observes first-hand the value provided by these outlets, it is alarming that they are at risk of extinction. FCPS after-school programs serve two primary roles. Firstly, they act as a needed protective barrier, ensuring that thousands of kids across the county have supervised, safe environments to be in while their parents or guardians are at work. Secondly, and equally crucial, these programs provide additional academic assistance to students who are struggling with their grades or find certain subjects challenging.

The Harvard Family Research Project elucidates the benefits of such programs, indicating that they enhance academic achievement, improve social and emotional development, and encourage physical health (Harvard Family Research Project, 2008). In an age when approximately 19.4% of children in Virginia live without a stay-at-home parent (KIDS COUNT Data Center, 2019), we can see that after-school programs fill a void that cannot be understated.

Therefore, maintaining FCPS after-school programs is not merely a preference, but an urgent necessity. This petition calls upon the FCPS board and other stakeholders to reflect on the critical roles that these programs play, and to commit to their continuation. Please sign this petition to support keeping these valuable after-school programs running within the FCPS system.
