MAD - Matagorda County Against Data Centers

MAD - Matagorda County Against Data Centers
The Issue
There are currently 3 data centers attempting to locate in our county.
Matagorda County has long been a refuge for wildlife and a haven for natural tourism. Known for its beaches, fishing, farming, and hunting, our county offers a unique blend of natural beauty and seclusion that cannot be found anywhere else.
We are dedicated to preserving the health of our land for both our community and the countless visitors who come to our county.
These proposed data centers threaten an already thining line, potentially introducing significant noise, air, water, and light pollution. These centers are known for consuming a vast amount of energy while increasing electricity cost for residents. Additionally, they generat heat, and emit exhaust gases, contributing to pollution where they are located.
Did you know that ONE 10 Megawatt Data Center uses electricity equivalent to 8,000 - 10,000 homes worth of power. Matagorda County is missing the infrastructure to support even one of these monstrosities, much less 3.
Data centers require a significant amount of water to keep their systems cool. In an area where agriculture and local homes rely heavily on groundwater, the establishment of these centers poses a real threat to our water supply. We cannot risk endangering our ecosystems or compromising the water that our families and farms depend upon. Depending on the cooling type 200,000 to 500,000 gallons PER DAY of water is used for a 10MW Center - that is a small town's daily water usage in it's entirety.
Apart from environmental concerns, the social implications cannot be ignored. The potential noise and light pollution from construction and operation will adversely affect Matagorda County residents, livestock, and wildlife. Data centers utilize cooling fans & chillers that run 24/7 anywhere from 45-60dB.
Under best circumstances, this is a low hum comparable to an industrial air conditioning that never stops running. Least we forget, Matagorda County is an essential path of migration for many bird species that are negativity affected by light pollution.
This type of noise and light pollution impacts livestock, wildlife, and humans alike...
