Over the years, India has lost some of it's magnificent wildlife. The Indian Caracal, is a medium sized cat that is fast approaching extinction. Sharing a similar history like the Asiatic Cheetah, this cat was once trained by the Mughal's to hunt birds and other small prey. 

Its current distribution in India is restricted to the drier parts and it has been sighted in the Kutch district of Gujarat, Narayan Sarovar in Gujarat, the Sariska Tiger Reserve, the Ranthambhore National Park and Bikaner district in Rajasthan, the Melghat Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra and Chambal region of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

There are an estimated 200 Caracals left in India, and the major reason behind it's falling numbers is the loss of habitat.

Through this peitition, we urge our forest minister to take measures to protect the existing habitat of the caracal, undertake studies to estimate their population and distribution and release guidelines for their protection.
