(English follows)

Cap retallada a l’Esmuc.

Si esperen silenci, tocarem més fort!

ESMUC Student Manifesto

(Catalan Music High School)

On the 5th of June  the Esmuc School Council was informed of a series of austerity measures designed to reduce our centre’s budget by one and a half million euros. The measures include a reduction in class hours (especially individual lessons)for the students,an increase in teaching hours  and a reduction in salary for staff, a rise in course fees and an attack on the working conditions of all the personnel.

We believe that these cuts at the Esmuc form part of a processs towards precarity and liberalization of the whole  public  education system, as is occuring in universities ,secondary ,nursey and music chools, and they represent a brutal attack on one of the basic pillars of our society. The situation is made worse by the fact that the Esmuc is the only publicly-funded centre for advanced musical studies in the whole of Catalonia, a condition that makes it of vital importance.

As students of the Esmuc, we refuse not to react in the face of this threat to the future of the School. We cannot remain silent before those who, using the economic crisis as an excuse, are determined to weaken publicly-funded music higher education to the point of its total dissapearance.

As a result, we decide:

1 To reject categorically any further reduction in the Esmuc’s funding. Cuts over the previous academic years have seriously undermined the working conditions of the employees and the quality of our education. We also oppose the increase in student fees.

2 To  demand complete information about  finances and   management of the School by its Foundation, chaired by Irene Rigau,Education Secretary.

3 To denounce the lack of democracy at the School, where the Directors are appointed by an external body, and the students have no possibility of participating in the organs of government; this is a deep-rooted grievance and one that must be tackled in the face of the threat to the School’s survival.

As students, we are convinced that these demands are just and necessary ,and we will continue to fight along side the teaching and non-teaching staff and the whole academic community to defend our centre and publicly-funded quality education.

No cuts for the the Esmuc!

If they attempt to silence us, we will play louder!!
