These beautiful boys were rescued on Sunday from someone who wanted them gone ASAP two months after buying them from Pets at Home. The discounted pair was available from the adoption section of a Pets at Home store and obtained for a 3-year-old child. Despite being house rabbits with no winter fur to protect them, they were immediately put outside to spent most of their time locked up in a small hutch. They were neglected and ended up fighting. The owner then had a baby, the child wasn’t interested in the rabbits, and looking after them was just another thing to do!
When the rabbits arrived at the rescue their nails were long and curled upwards, they had multiple bite wounds and one rabbit had an untreated eye infection. They came together with a bag of damp food! The boys, named Foofoo and Pippin, are thought to be about a year old. They are now safe and receiving the care they need and are booked in for a vet check and vaccinations. They have also been given lots of space to enjoy in a large shed and outside as well. There’s been no fighting since they arrived at the rescue but they are currently scared of people and need some time to recover.
Like many rabbits available from Pets at Home adoption centres, Foofoo and Pippin were obtained without proper research, consideration or commitment. They had probably suffered in a previous home before becoming unwanted. Many of the rabbits for adoption have special needs, they may have been injured (often due to fights breaking up in the stores) or they are ill (already ill when delivered from the breeder - pasteurella, coccidiosis are common) or neglected by their previous owners, yet they still end up in the wrong hands again, because no home-checks are carried out and the buyers are not properly vetted.
Pets at Home needs to stop selling rabbits and this includes adoption! No rabbit should be displayed in a shop to be purchased on a whim by anyone who wants one, for themselves or their child.
