Lower the voting age to include all turning 18 the year of the election
The Issue
In the last presidential election, 350,000 US-born teenagers were excluded from voting just because they missed the age cut-off by a mere month or even less. In the upcoming election, this number is set to rise to a staggering 600,000. As one of those affected, I feel robbed of my right to participate in shaping the future of our country. It's particularly frustrating knowing that many are essentially the same age as those who are eligible to vote, and yet, we are sidelined during these critical times for our nation's future.
Excluding such a significant number of young voters is, in my eyes, criminal. We are at a pivotal moment in history, with key issues on the line that will determine the direction of the United States for years to come. Climate change, education policies, healthcare, immigration laws, and technological advancements are all at stakes where young voices are direly needed. As teenagers, we are not only the future leaders and innovators but also the current stakeholders affected by these pressing issues. Our perspectives, concerns, and votes should matter.
By adjusting the voting laws to allow those who are turning 18 in the year of the election to vote, we can empower hundreds of thousands of potential voters. This change is both realistic and necessary. By implementing it, elected officials will ensure a more representative democracy—a system truly reflective of all its constituents.
Consider joining this movement to expand our electorate and make our democratic processes more inclusive. Your support could make a significant difference in shaping a fair electoral system that values every voice, particularly those of the next generation poised to inherit the consequences of today's decisions.
Sign this petition to call for an amendment to allow all who turn 18 in the year of the presidential election the right to vote.
