Vote16 NJ started this petition

Vote16NJ wants to give municipalities in New Jersey the option to enfranchise 16 and 17-year-olds. 16 and 17-year-olds in New Jersey are highly civically engaged, where they deal with issues under the jurisdiction of local government, such as school board elections. They have the right to drive and even pay taxes, still without any form of representation or voice within their local governments and schools.

Not only will lowering the voting age benefit the civic well-being of the state of New Jersey, but it will tremendously increase the state's crippling voter turnout. In states and countries where the right to vote has been granted to 16 and 17-year-olds, this demographic of young people turns out at nearly double the rates of adults and vote more often than adults. Plus, enabling 16- and 17-year-olds to vote is the perfect complement to NJ’s recent passage of mandatory civics education in middle school that begins will be enforced during the 2022 school year.

Sign our petition today and show your support for this important movement to enfranchise 16 and 17-year-olds.
