Lower the voting age to 16 in Australia
The issue
Growing up in Australia and witnessing the current political climate firsthand, I feel a deep sense of urgency and frustration. As young Australians, we watch decisions being made that will inevitably impact our future, yet we have no say in the matter. I’m currently 15 years old and will only turn 17 when the next federal election in 2028 takes place. However, like many of my peers, I am informed, engaged, and eager to play a part in shaping the future of our country.
Lowering the voting age to 16 is a step towards a more inclusive and representative democracy in Australia. Young people possess the capacity and motivation to contribute meaningfully to political discourse. In fact, countries like Scotland and Austria have already recognised the importance of younger voices in politics and have successfully lowered their voting ages to 16.
The argument that young people are uninterested or uninformed is unfounded. A 2020 study by the Australian Electoral Study found that 64% of young people aged 16–17 believe that voting is a civic duty. Furthermore, young Australians are on the frontline of many issues affecting our world today, from climate change to technological advancement and education reform. They deserve the opportunity to voice their opinions on policies that directly affect these areas.
A lowering of the voting age would also foster early political engagement, encouraging future generations to participate actively in elections. This could lead to higher voter turnout and a more engaged citizenry in the long run, benefiting Australia's democracy as a whole.
We must act now to empower our youth and acknowledge their stake in our collective future. I urge the Australian government and electoral authorities to seriously consider amending the voting age. Let us give our youth the opportunity they deserve to speak up and contribute to the future of our nation.
Please sign this petition to show your support for lowering the voting age to 16 in Australia and empower the voices of young Australians nationwide. By doing so, you are advocating for a richer, more vibrant democracy that listens to all its stakeholders.
