Lower the voting age to 13 in California

The Issue

I can't vote. My friends can't vote. It's frustrating knowing that despite our knowledge and passion for politics, we are silenced because of our age. We probably know more about politics than around 30% of voters, yet we are denied the basic democratic right to have our voices heard in the matters that affect our lives directly.

We live in a time where young people are more informed and engaged than ever before. Thanks to technology, resources, and educational opportunities, we have the ability to understand political processes and issues deeply. In California, 16 and 17-year-olds are actively participating in community service, shaping local cultures, and contributing to the community's welfare. Yet, when it comes to making decisions that impact our education, environment, and future jobs, our voices are inexplicably absent from the ballot box.

Lowering the voting age to 16 for state and local elections in California will empower us to participate more fully in our democracy. This change will foster civic responsibility and engagement from a younger age, ultimately leading to a more informed and active citizenry. It's not just about enabling us to vote; it's about validating our role as active members of society who care deeply about its future.

In places like Austria, Brazil, and Scotland, where the voting age has been lowered, young voters have shown themselves to be reliable and conscientious. These regions have reported increased political engagement and strengthened democratic participation. By lowering the voting age, California has the opportunity to lead by example in the United States, showing a commitment to inclusive and representative democracy.

Join me in urging the California State Legislature to amend current laws, allowing 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17-year-olds to vote in state and local elections. Every signature on this petition is a step towards amplifying the voices of young Californians who are eager to take an active role in shaping their futures. Sign this petition and help us make history.
