The Issue

Our peaceful hamlet of around 30 houses, nestled in beautiful Cornwall, has suffered from speeding vehicles through our quiet lanes, with no regard for the safety of other road users. Our Cornish lanes weren't built for motor vehicles, but with more traffic on our rural roads, including the popularity of online shopping & supermarket deliveries our tiny lanes can't cope with the extra demand of these larger vehicles.

Just recently, a beloved pet was tragically killed in Seworgan due to traffic on our narrow lanes. Drivers often travel too fast, partly because they are unaware of the appropriate speeds for these types of roads. This incident is only one among many potential accidents that endanger the lives of both residents and their cherished animals every day.

Our small village lacks any speed signage, or indication that we are in fact a small village, not just a continuation of a main road.  Our sign as you enter the village says “ Seworgan Please drive carefully” but there is no indication of a speed limit warning drives they are entering a more built-up area. We are on a national speed limit road, making it unclear to drivers that they should be reducing their speed as they drive through, just to drive carefully.

This oversight by local authorities is putting all of us—particularly children, pets, horse riders, cyclists and people just walking their dogs—at great risk. We have no footpaths to escape a speeding vehicle on a blind bend!!! It's imperative that we take action now before another tragedy occurs.

Firstly reducing the speed limit through our village and installing clear signage would be a straightforward yet powerful measure to enhance our safety.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, a pedestrian or animal hit by a car at 20 mph has a vastly higher probability of survival than if struck at 60mph. These figures illustrate the life-saving impact that lower speed limits can have in our everyday life.

We urge the local council to prioritise the safety of our community by implementing prominent signage to alert drivers of any changes to the road ahead. Communities similar to ours have successfully implemented these traffic measures and have witnessed a significant drop in road accidents as a result.

This is a call to action for every member of our rural community who values safety over speed. By signing this petition, you are asking our local authorities to implement crucial changes to protect our village—before another incident claims a life or another beloved pet is lost.

Join us in making Seworgan & the surrounding area a safer place for everyone.
